International workshop on sports safety promotion in local communities

The rationale for the workshop is that international sports safety programs are yet to critically evaluate sports safety policies and injury prevention programs with regard to outcomes for a broad range of client groups, covering the spectrum of those who are socially disadvantaged to those from wealthy western countries.  At the global level, it is particularly important that the estimated and factual effects of institutional sports safety interventions in the third world country context be considered. A central tenant is that young sportspersons have the right to health and well-being, to be achieved by a balance of sports industry needs and safety orientated scientific knowledge and evidence-based actions. The specific aim of the workshop is twofold: to support the establishment of the sports injury problem firmly on the global health policy agenda, and to introduce sports safety as a mandatory component in the establishment of sustainable local sports organizations.

The workshop will be highly interactive with tutorials combined with presentations from participants. The first section of the workshop will consist of an introduction to sports safety. There will be plenty of possibilities to discuss methodological and theoretical issues with importance for development and implementation of sports safety programs in local communities. The second section of the workshop will consist of presentations from the workshop participants. There will be room in the schedule for presentation of between 4-6 programs or sports safety issues. Each presentation will be followed by a panel review and plenary discussion. The workshop is concluded by a plenary session followed by a final discussion.
